6. Taj Mahal, India
One of the world’s most famous buildings, the Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631. The white marble monument rises on a three-acre site on the Yamuna River in the northern city of Agra. The mausoleum has been called the jewel of Muslim art in India, an architectural masterpiece and one of the most romantic buildings in the world.
