If you blow up at them when they confide in you about something like drinking at a party or failing an essay, they will be less likely to come to you again. Gaining and maintaining their trust is essential for keeping the lines of communication open. Talking through issues instead of getting upset with them will remind them that you are the best source for advice, not the internet or their often ill-informed peers.

Getting through the hormonal hurricane of being in high school can be just as challenging for parents as it is for teens. Luckily, we have done it before and know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Tell them you love them as often as you can, hug them on the way out the door and keep your cool.
