2. The Children Do Their Chores
Another way to judge your children’s readiness is by observing their attitude towards chores. Do they fight you about doing them or do they do them without you asking? If they seem able to take initiative or at least do what you ask, they may be ready to share in the responsibilities of caring for a pet.
It’s important to have a discussion with them ahead of time about how often they’ll have to feed the pet or change its litter, however. Find a way to make it enjoyable. As with any chore, if you can convince them it’s not really a chore, they’ll be more likely to do it.
