If you have kids, it’s likely that at some point they have begged you for a pet of some sort. Even if you’re single or don’t have any kids, the thought of having a furry companion may have crossed your mind. However, having a pet can be a huge responsibility for a family of any size and should not be taken lightly.

Animals need to be cared for and attended to regularly, just like a child. While some pets may require more care than others, it’s important to examine just how ready your family is to take care of one. Here are eight ways to tell if it’s time to adopt a forever friend.

1. You’ve Taken Your Time

One of the best ways to figure out if your family is ready for a pet is by waiting. Ok, so the kids are begging for a puppy now, but will they still be bugging you in six months or a year? If you’re able to hold out for a while, you’ll be able to tell how serious they are about it. It would be horrible to adopt a puppy and have them get bored with it after a few months. Getting a pet is a big decision and shouldn’t be rushed. Taking your time will also give you time to weigh the pros and cons.
