9. Depression

Depression can happen to anyone at any age; however, hormone fluctuations that affect your brain can make depression more common during menopause. Feeling unhappy or sad for short periods of time without any explanation is normal, but persistent feelings that affect daily life may be a sign of depression.

The severity and duration of the sad feelings, as well as the presence of other symptoms distinguish normal sadness from depression. Other symptoms of depression include loss of interest in day-to-day activities and withdrawal from family and friends.
