There are many foods that seem healthy on the surface, but are secretly loaded with sugars, fat, and cholesterol. When you are trying to keep your diet in check and keep your body fueled with high quality nutrition, it can be frustrating to know that some seemingly healthy foods may not be as great as you think.

Here are 10 unhealthy ‘health foods’, as well as better alternatives.

1. Bran/Blueberry Muffins

Because muffins made with bran or fruit such as blueberries are known for their filling properties and being filled with fiber, they are often thought of as a healthy morning breakfast or snack. However, most of the time these muffins are made with refined white flour and excessive amounts of sugar – why do you think they taste so good?

This makes the muffin high in calories and refined sugars, making your blood sugar spike and leaving you hungry soon after. It is important to read the labels and understand the nutrition information. If you like bran muffins try baking your own, with whole-wheat flour and substituting unsweetened applesauce for the sugar. You will get the benefits of the fiber and have longer lasting energy from the whole grain carbohydrates.
